The industrial sector is constantly searching for cost-effective and efficient alternatives to expensive heavy fuel oils. A technologically mature and economically attractive solution is the Coal Water Slurry (CWS). This liquid fuel consists of finely ground coal dust and water, and it can be pumped, stored, and burned much like heavy fuel oil.
However, for this mixture to be practical for everyday industrial use, a crucial chemical hurdle must be overcome. This is where calcium lignosulfonate comes into play as an indispensable additive and dispersant.
The Challenge with Coal Water Slurries
To achieve a high heating value, a coal water slurry must contain as much coal as possible (ideally a 60% to 70% solid content). However, coal particles are naturally water-repellent (hydrophobic). If they are simply mixed with water, the particles immediately clump together. The viscosity spikes drastically, the mixture becomes impossible to pump, and the heavy coal quickly settles at the bottom of the tank.
How Calcium Lignosulfonate Solves the Problem

The lignosulfonate molecules specifically adsorb onto the surface of the hydrophobic coal particles. The outward-facing, water-loving (hydrophilic) sulfonate groups impart a strong negative electrical charge to the coal. Through this electrostatic repulsion, combined with steric hindrance (spatial separation), the coal particles are forced away from each other. They can no longer agglomerate or clump.
