Sodium Naphthalene Formaldehyde (SNF)

Product Name: Sodium Naphthalene Formaldehyde

Synonyms: Sodium Naphthalene Sulfonate Formaldehyde, Poly Naphthalene Sulfonate (PNS), SNF Superplasticizer

CAS Number: 36290-04-7 | HS Code: 3824401000

Primary Applications: Concrete superplasticizer (high-range water reducer), textile dye dispersant, and agricultural chemical stabilizer.

1. Product Overview

Sodium Naphthalene Formaldehyde (SNF) is an incredibly powerful, highly refined anionic polymer. Synthesized by reacting naphthalene with sulfuric acid and formaldehyde, it acts as a premium dispersing agent across multiple heavy industries.

Its most prominent use is in the construction sector as a high-range water-reducing admixture for cement and concrete. By applying a strong negative charge to cement particles, SNF forces them to repel each other. This physical reaction unlocks water trapped inside cement clumps, allowing for a highly fluid, workable concrete mix while drastically slashing the actual volume of water required.

4. Key Industrial Benefits

For Concrete & Construction:

  • Massive Strength Gains: By dropping the water-to-cement ratio by 10% to 25%, SNF eliminates internal air voids. As shown in the test data above, this can boost early-stage compressive strength by 60% and ultimate 28-day strength by 25%.
  • Unmatched Workability: It dramatically increases the “slump” of concrete. This turns stiff, unworkable concrete into a smooth, flowing mix that is incredibly easy to pump up skyscrapers or pour into tight, rebar-heavy precast molds.
  • Zero Rebar Corrosion: The ultra-low chloride content (under 0.3% for the premium grade) ensures the structural steel hidden inside the concrete will not rust or degrade over time.

For Textiles & Agriculture:

  • Textile Dyeing: Acts as a thermal-stable dispersant in dye baths, ensuring disperse and vat dyes do not clump under extreme heat, guaranteeing level color across the fabric.
  • Agrochemicals: Added to wettable pesticide powders to ensure the active chemical ingredients suspend uniformly in spray tanks without settling at the bottom.

5. Recommended Dosage & Usage (Concrete)

  • Standard Dosage: Blend at 0.5% to 1.0% of the total dry cement weight. For most standard mixes, a sweet spot of 0.75% is advised.
  • Application Method: Do not pour the dry powder directly onto dry cement. Dissolve the required amount of SNF into the mixing water first, or add it to the wet concrete mix at the very end of the batching process. Stir for an additional 1-2 minutes to ensure complete, homogenous distribution.

6. Packaging & Storage

  • Packaged in heavy-duty woven plastic bags. Available in standard 25 kg bags, or bulk jumbo bags of 650 kg and 700 kg.
  • Store in a dedicated, dry, well-ventilated warehouse.
  • Note: If the powder happens to absorb ambient moisture and forms soft clumps, its chemical efficacy is not compromised. Simply smash the lumps or dissolve them directly into your solution water.
