Lignin

Product Name: Alkaline Lignin

Common Synonyms: Kraft Lignin, Natural Lignin Polymer, Bio-Lignin

CAS Number: 8068-05-1

Primary Applications: Natural industrial binder, phenolic resin replacement, soil conditioner, and slow-release fertilizer base.

1. Product Overview

Lignin is nature’s ultimate structural glue. It is the complex, highly cross-linked organic polymer that gives wood and plant cell walls their rigid, unyielding strength. Extracted commercially through the alkaline pulping process, our Alkaline Lignin is a highly purified, massively renewable B2B raw material.

As industries globally move away from toxic, petroleum-based chemicals, Lignin has emerged as the premier green alternative. Because its molecular structure is packed with active phenolic and aliphatic hydroxyl groups, it behaves identically to synthetic phenols. This allows manufacturers to seamlessly substitute it into adhesives, resins, binders, and agricultural blends to slash carbon footprints without sacrificing mechanical performance.

3. Key Industrial Benefits

Alkaline Lignin is an incredibly versatile biopolymer, acting as a binder, a carbon source, and a chemical building block across entirely different sectors:

For Industrial Binders & Dust Suppression:

  • Unmatched Briquetting Strength: It is the industry standard for binding difficult, powdery materials into solid, durable shapes. Whether you are pelletizing animal feed, briquetting coal dust for power plants, or extruding raw metal ores, Lignin acts as a natural thermosetting glue.
  • Non-Toxic Dust Control: Sprayed over dirt roads, mining haul routes, or agricultural fields, it binds loose particulate matter together into a hardened crust, preventing wind erosion and airborne dust without poisoning the local water table.

For Agriculture (Soil Health & Fertilizers):

  • Instant Organic Carbon: Lignin is pure, slow-decaying organic matter. When tilled into degraded, sandy, or over-farmed soils, it dramatically rebuilds the soil’s humus layer, improving water retention and fostering explosive microbial growth.
  • Fertilizer Coating: Used to coat granular fertilizers (like urea), it physically slows down the release of volatile nitrogen into the soil, preventing nitrate leaching and ensuring the crop gets a steady diet of nutrients throughout the growing season.

For Resins & Plastics:

  • Phenol-Formaldehyde Substitute: Because Lignin is a natural polyphenol, plywood and OSB manufacturers can replace up to 50% of the highly toxic, petroleum-derived phenol in their wood adhesives with Lignin. This drastically lowers VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) emissions and cuts raw material costs.

4. Recommended Dosage & Formulation Notes

Because it requires an alkaline environment to fully dissolve, proper pH management is critical during formulation.

  • Binder Formulations: Typically dosed at 2.0% to 5.0% by weight for coal, biomass, or mineral briquettes. The powder can be mixed dry and activated with a small amount of water or steam during the pressing phase.
  • Agricultural Soil Amendment: For broadcast field application to restore carbon-depleted soils, rates of 50 to 150 kg per hectare are standard, often mixed with base NPK fertilizers.
  • Resin Manufacturing: To dissolve the powder for liquid adhesive production, ensure the water matrix is pre-adjusted to a pH of at least 10.0 using sodium hydroxide before slowly adding the Lignin.

5. Packaging & Storage

  • Standard Packaging: Supplied in heavy-duty 25 kg woven poly bags or high-capacity 500 kg / 600 kg bulk jumbo bags.
  • Storage Protocol: Store indoors in a dry, well-ventilated warehouse. Alkaline Lignin is highly stable and non-reactive, but it will absorb moisture if left exposed to high humidity. Ensure bags are securely tied off after partial use.
  • Shelf Life: Guaranteed for up to 36 months from the date of manufacture when kept perfectly dry.
